¶1. Poloff delivered reftel demarche to Eugenio del Solar at
the Special Policies division of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs on May 2. On May 10, Cmdr. Daniel Sarzosa of
DIRECTEMAR (Directorate of Maritime Affairs, Navy branch
comparable to U.S. Coast Guard) told Poloff that DIRECTEMAR
had recommended ratification of the 2005 protocols to the
MFA. Sarzosa noted that Chile had strongly supported the
adoption of the protocols, and said ratification was assured.
However, he said the legislative ratification process would
take some time. He expected the Chilean Congress to ratify
by the end of 2006.
