1. (C) Ambassador Amira Esquivel, Human Rights Director in
the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told Poloff on April
21 the U.S. could count on Chile to support only those
countries which are truly committed to human rights for the
UN Human Rights Council. Esquivel noted, however, the GOC
has not discussed making a public statement to that effect,
and offered it was unlikely to do so.
2. (C) Esquivel said Chile would not run for the Council
this year due to other commitments and candidacies it is
pursuing. She predicted Chile would put forward a candidate
for the Council next year.
