August 13 Santiago conservative, independent "La Tercera" (circ.
102,000) ran a column by historian Joaquin Fermandois entitled,
"Cuba and Chile: The Last Act?" Quote:
"Cuba has never forgiven that part of the Chilean left that helped
consolidate democracy in Chile, and less those who praised the
'Chilean model.' What will follow in Cuba will no longer be the
same, but the truth is that the heirs (of the Cuban model),
including the new populists in Latin America, will reproduce the
hostility toward Chile's model. This was evident in the criticism
that Fidel Castro made of Chile and Bachelet in the Mercosur Summit
in Argentina.... Events show that perhaps this will be the last act
of the odd ties that have lasted for almost half a century."
