1. Poloff delivered reftel demarche to Cmdr. Daniel Sarzosa
of DIRECTAMAR (Directorate of Maritime Affairs, roughly
equivalent to the U.S. Coast Guard) on May 11. Sarzosa told
Poloff on May 18 that Chile shared the the U.S. position on
limiting the role of the International Mobile Satellite
Organization (IMSO).
2. Sarzosa also said Chile's position at the 81st session of
the International Maritime Organization's Maritime Security
Committee (MSC81) was to support fully the expansion of the
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS),the
development of the Long Range Identification and Tracking
system, and oppose an expanded role for IMSO. Sarzosa said
he had forwarded reftel points to the Chilean representative
at the MSC81, as they would help to reinforce Chile's
positions.
