(U) The following summarizes Embassy INL activities in October 2006. -------------- ILEA -------------- ¶2. (U) ILEA staff continued supervising the renovation of the ILEA - Santa Tecla facility, and made preparations to host an ILEA course in November 2006. -------------- NARCOTICS INTERDICTION -------------- ¶3. (U) Operations: Officers of the Anti-Narcotics Police (DAN) at the INL-constructed vehicle inspection facility in El Amatillo inspected 1,066 cars, 1,339 passenger buses, and 600 commercial freight trucks, resulting in the arrest of 55 individuals for narcotics trafficking and the seizure of 586 grams of crack and 1.7 kilograms (kg) of heroin. In all operations throughout the country, the INL-supported DAN seized 24.5kg of cocaine and 40 grams of crack, and arrested 10 individuals for trafficking offenses. -------------- MONEY LAUNDERING -------------- ¶4. (U) Operations: The INL-supported Financial Investigations Unit (FIU) received 20 Suspicious Activities Reports and opened 3 new investigations. 1 person was arrested and $6,943.23 was seized. -------------- -------------- HUMAN SMUGGLING/TRAFFICKING AND TRANSIT SECURITY -------------- -------------- ¶5. (U) Operations: The INL-supported Border Police (Fronteras) arrested 24 individuals for human smuggling and 10 suspects for trafficking in persons. Police operations rescued 11 minors in the process of being smuggled or trafficked. 34 persons were prosecuted for this offense. Barclay
