On May 15, poloff spoke to Mario Rivera, Director of
Multilateral Relations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
(MFA) regarding reftel. Rivera indicated that although the
MFA is inclined to support the Proliferation Security
Initiative, they still need to achieve consensus with other
government agencies and the offiial approval of Minister
Francisco Lainez. A prposal will be sent to Lainez within
the next fewdays, at which time Rivera expects that a
meetin will be held to discuss the matter with the affectd
government agencies. Rivera noted that they hd also
received communications from the Spanish nd French embassies
urging them to support the iitiative. Poloff will continue
to broach the suject with Rivera, and will report any
further information septel.
