1. (C) March 22, Poloffs delivered reftel demarche to MFA
Office Director for Middle East Regional Cooperation,
Antonella Uneddu, and separately provided Sudan points to MFA
Horn of Africa Office Director Fabrizio Pignatelli. March
24, Pignatelli responded that the MFA had contacted all
Italian embassies in Arab League member states March 23,
instructing them to support the Sudan objectives in the
demarche. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has also
spoken recently in favor of rehatting the African Union
Mission in Sudan to a UN operation, according to Pignatelli.
Echoing a point made previously by the MFA Director General
for Sub-Saharan Africa, Armando Sanguini (reftel B),
Pignatelli also noted that this effort was a good example of
how it would be useful for Italy to be part of the
UK-organized consultative group for Sudan, since it would
allow the GOI to better coordinate its position on issues
like the reftel Arab League points.
