1. (S/NF) Post's Law Enforcement Working Group met December
29 to discuss reftel. Post believes that there is no need
for replacement charitable services in Italy, as there are no
known branches of RIHS in country. Additionally, the GOI
would likely support the USG designation to the UN 1267
Sanctions Committee, if the USG informs the GOI well enough
in advance of its designation and there are no significant
Italian interests at stake (we know of none). We would
optimize the designation's chances for success at the UN by
working closely with our Italian counterparts and sharing all
available information with them at the earliest possible date.
2. (S/NF) Post would like to highlight the excellent
cooperation between the U.S. and Italy on terrorism finance
matters -- and stress the need for continued cooperation
through information sharing and open discussions. This is
especially important now, given Italy's seat on the UNSC,
starting January 2007, and the other equities involved in our
bilateral relationship at the UN -- e.g., Iran sanctions.
