(SBU) Econoff forwarded reftel points December 11 to the MFA
Office of G8 and Global Affairs and the Ministry of Finance
Financial Crimes Prevention Office. Econoff followed up on
reftel points with a visit to Giampaolo Cantini, Director of
the Office of G8 and Global Affairs, December 28. Cantini
stated that the GOI Financial Security Committee (FSC) would
refer reftel points to the Financial Intelligence Unit of the
Ufficio Italiano dei Cambi (Italian Financial Exchange
Office) to determine if any funds from the individuals and
entities in question were ever, or are now, present in the
Italian financial system. If so, the FSC would inform the
Embassy and take proper legal action to comply with domestic
and international law.
