TAGS: PREL PHUM PTER UNGA LE IS IT
SUBJECT: ITALY: LEBANON RESOLUTIONS UNBALANCED, EU SEEKING
WITHDRAWAL
REF: STATE 176793
Classified By: Political Minister Counselor David D. Pearce for reasons
1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) Poloffs delivered reftel demarche October 23 separately
to MFA Acting UN Office Director Leonardo Bencini and Lebanon
Desk Officer Giorgia De Parolis, expressing U.S. concerns
regarding the two NAM-sponsored UNGA resolutions on Lebanon.
Poloffs noted the troubling trend of politicizing human
rights fora and non-political UN institutions like the Third
Committee and highlighted the obvious anti-Israel bias of the
Lebanon resolutions. Bencini said the GOI would coordinate
within the EU on a response, and noted the EU was exploring
the possibility that the resolutions could be withdrawn.
Bencini and De Parolis both called the resolutions unbalanced.
