(C) Poloff delivered reftel points to Luigi Diodati of the
OSCE office of the Italian MFA. Diodati said the GOI had
already received information on the USG position through
their OSCE mission in Vienna. Diodati said the head of the
MFA's OSCE office, Brunella Borzi was not in Rome but upon
her return would begin consultations with counterparts in
other EU capitals prior to formalizing the Italian position
in the hope that a broad EU consensus could emerge through
the discussions. Meanwhile, he said, the GOI understood USG
concerns about a possible Kazakh chairmanship of the
organization, but was not opposed to the bid at this time.
