SUBJECT: COURT DISMISSES CASE CITED BY ILO

REF: RANGOON 1376

On September 20, a Thayet Township Court dismissed the case
against three Aunglan villagers charged with providing false
information to the ILO and GOB about the death of forced
labor victim U Win Lwin (reftel). According to a District
Court officer, the case was dismissed under Act 248, which
means that a prosecutor can request the case be called back
into court later. This was the final of three forced
labor-related cases identified in June by the International
Labor Conference for resolution as evidence of the GOB
commitment to a moratorium on persecutions of forced labor
complainants. Next step should be the establishment of an
acceptable mechanism to address future forced labor
complaints.
