FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

(SBU) A/DCM and Poloff met May 17 with Veronika Stromsikova,
Czech MFA's Director of the Human Rights Department, to
discuss the position of the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand
on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People
(reftel). Stromsikova said indigenous rights is not a
priority issue for the Czechs because they have no experience
with indigenous people, and they must limit the number of
human rights issues they take on in order to be effective.
That said, Stromsikova agreed to review the talking points
and related documents and notify Poloffs if the Czechs
formulate a position on the issue.
