SUBJECT: CZECHS ON THE CD MINISTERIAL

1. (SBU) POLOFF spoke with Czech MFA Director of the UN
Department Jan Kara on September 12 to discuss reftel
concerning the Communities of Democracies (CD) Ministerial
scheduled to take place during UNGA on September 20. Kara
thanked the U.S. for providing advance information about
issues to be discussed at the Ministerial. He said the Czech
representative will be MFA Political Director Martin
Povejsil. The Czechs have not decided whether they will speak
at the Ministerial, but will take U.S. requests under
advisement. In addition, the Czechs will consider the U.S.
request to participate in one or more of the proposed CD
working groups: (1) Democratic Governance and Civil Society,
(2) Poverty, Development, and Democratic Governance, (3)
Regional and International Cooperation for Democratic
Governance, and (4) National and Transnational Threats to
Democracy.
