1. (C) On June 8, we discussed upcoming IAEA BOG meeting
with Nicolas Roche, MFA counselor working on Iran
nonproliferation, and shared non-paper with U.S. suggestions
for inclusion in National Statements at the BOG.
2. (C) Roche expressed appreciation for our reftel
suggestions and noted that while the French approach for next
week's BOG meeting in Vienna had not been finalized, the MFA
was thinking along the same lines as the United States.
France saw no need for an IAEA resolution and would proceed
with the preparation of a National Statement.
3. (C) He noted, however, that this approach would be
subject to review were Iran to formally reject the proposals
on the table during the week that the BOG is meeting.
Separately, Roche said the MFA also is doing some internal
thinking on whether and how to formally inform BOG
representatives of the proposals, without sharing a copy of
text of the close-hold proposals, but drawing instead from
the press statement issued in Vienna. France's Permanent
Representative in Vienna likely would be consulting with us
on this issue upon his return from Paris, Roche observed.
