(U) Suriname ratified the United Nations Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on February 7. The country signed the Treaty, which bans all nuclear explosions in all environments, for military or civilian purposes, on January 14, 1997. Suriname is the 129th country to ratify the CTBT. ¶2. (U) Suriname's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ewald Limon, was quoted in a local newspaper as saying that Suriname supports nuclear disarmament and even though the country does not carry out any nuclear tests itself, any such nuclear tests and explosions will be prohibited under its jurisdiction.
