SUBJECT: SURINAME RATIFIES COMPREHENSIVE NUCLEAR-TEST-BAN
TREATY

1. (U) Suriname ratified the United Nations Comprehensive
Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on February 7. The country
signed the Treaty, which bans all nuclear explosions in all
environments, for military or civilian purposes, on January
14, 1997. Suriname is the 129th country to ratify the
CTBT.

2. (U) Suriname's permanent representative to the United
Nations, Ewald Limon, was quoted in a local newspaper as
saying that Suriname supports nuclear disarmament and even
though the country does not carry out any nuclear tests
itself, any such nuclear tests and explosions will be
prohibited under its jurisdiction.
