(C) On July 27 we visited with Knut Langeland (Senior
Advisor) and Jan Arve Knutsen (Deputy Director General and
Head of Section) in the MFA's Section for Disarmament and
Nonproliferation. Langeland welcomed our points (which
Knutsen identified as "very thorough"). Langeland (returning
yesterday from business travel) requested additional time to
carefully review the reftel points. He stressed that greater
progress must be made in disarmament, but also restated that
credit must be given for the nonproliferation achievements
made, thus far. He emphasized that the Nuclear Weapon Free
Zones (NFZs) were a "good idea," but believes that the U.S.
is a bit "ambivalent" in this area. He asserted that NFZs
were "a solid and tangible way of reducing nuclear weapons."
