1. (C) Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma
told DCM on June 5 that the GOI's impression of the Nuclear
Suppliers Groups (NSG) plenary in Brasilia was positive,
noting that a number of countries' positions were more
supportive than before. MEA Joint Secretary (Americans) S.
Jaishankar highlighted Germany, Japan and Brazil as countries
demonstrating a "more positive position." Acknowledging that
much work still needs to be done, Jaishankar remarked that
the GOI would continue to engage the NSG countries
bilaterally to press India's case.
2. (C) Sharma noted that South Africa held a somewhat
complicated position, but was generally positive towards
India's case. He concluded that, while there was only one
paragraph referencing India in the NSG Chairman's final
document, the GOI was pleased with the overall discussions.
