(C) On August 12, the Ambassador spoke with Minister
Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi regarding
reftel demarche. Bin Alawi, on leave in Salalah since
returning from the August 7 Arab League meeting in Beirut,
had yet to review the full text of the Resolution, but noted
that media reports suggest that the UNSC had made
considerable efforts to address the Lebanese government's
concerns with the initial draft. He stated that Oman and its
Arab League colleagues would wait for the GOL's official
reaction before issuing their own statements, but anticipated
that they would endorse the Resolution should the GOL accept
it. Bin Alawi has yet to be in touch with GOL officials,
however, to ascertain the government's position.
