HUMANITARIAN AID
This is an action message. Please see paragraph 2.
1. During a July 30 meeting with the Ambassador, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Under Secretary (deputy-secretary equivalent)
Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi expressed his concern regarding the
logistics of delivering humanitarian assistance for Lebanese
relief efforts. Sayyid Badr noted that Oman is currently
sending smaller quantities humanitarian assistance to
Damascus via Oman Air B737 aircraft. Given the logistical
difficulties in routing such aid through Syria, Sayyid Badr
inquired about alternate routings, such as through Jordan or
even directly to Beirut. Oman plans on hiring larger,
Russian-made cargo planes to deliver food, water, blankets,
tents, and power generators.
2. Action request. Embassy would appreciate Department
guidance in responding to this request.
