On August 31 emboff delivered reftel A talking points, along
with the requested diplomatic note and CV, on the re-election
of Dr. Ruth Wedgwood, the U.S. Candidate for the United
Nations Human Rights Committee, to Faruque Faquira, Head of
the United Nations Department, Directorate of the
International Conferences and Organizations at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs. This was the second demarche on
Professor Wedgwood's candidacy delivered to Faquira (see
reftel B for first demarche). Faquira informed emboff that
the Government of Mozambique was in the process of
considering the election, that they were aware of Professor
Wedgwood's candidacy and would take her candidacy into
consideration. No further substantive response was given.
Post would be interested in knowing the results of the
September 7 election and how Mozambique voted.
