INITIATIVE
REF: A. STATE 66885
B. MANAMA 0595
Classified by Ambassador William T. Monroe for reasons 1.4
(b) and (d).
(C) In a meeting covering several subjects (septels),the
Ambassador May 6 delivered Ref A demarche concerning the
Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) to Foreign Minister
Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. Shaikh Khalid replied,
"We're signing on" to PSI. He still needed to get the
Bahrain Defense Force's formal buy-in, but the GOB was ready
to do it. It is simply a matter of formalities, he said.
The Ambassador urged Shaikh Khalid to discuss PSI with his
colleagues at the GCC Consultative Meeting in Riyadh later
that day. Some had indicated they would participate in the
Turkish-hosted PSI exercise Anatolian Sun on May 24-26. If
Bahrain decides to join PSI, its participation in the
exercise would be welcome. Shaikh Khalid said he would
follow up on this matter in Riyadh.
