(C) Pol/Econ Chief April 19 delivered Ref A demarche
concerning Hamas comments on the April 17 Tel Aviv suicide
attack to MFA Assistant Under Secretary for Coordination and
Follow Up Shaikh Abdul Aziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, noting
also an item in the April 19 papers reporting news of the
April 24 visit to Bahrain of Palestinian Authority Foreign
Minister Mahmoud Al Zahar. Shaikh Abdul Aziz confirmed that
Al Zahar would visit Bahrain, saying he would meet only with
Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. He said
the visit was an opportunity for the GOB to deliver a strong
message to Hamas "behind closed doors." Shaikh Khalid will
tell Al Zahar that it is an absolute must for Hamas to
condemn terrorism. Just as Hamas denounces Israeli actions
against Palestinians, Hamas should denounce Palestinian
aggression against Israeli civilians. Now is the time for
Hamas to step up to its responsibilities to govern. Shaikh
Abdul Aziz said Shaikh Khalid would also deliver the three
Quartet conditions on engagement.
