December 7 delivered reftel demarche concerning clarifying
U.S. policy on outreach to Iraq's Sunnis to MFA Assistant
Under Secretary for Coordination and Follow Up Shaikh Abdul
Aziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa. Shaikh Abdul Aziz said that he
had tracked the issue in the press, including Saudi
government advisor Nawaf Obeid's claims about possible Saudi
intervention in Iraq. He dismissed unfounded allegations
that the United States would change its policy of engagement
with the Sunnis and expressed his appreciation for the
official USG clarification.
