TAGS: PARM PREL MNUC UNGA BA IR REGION ROW
SUBJECT: BAHRAIN: DEMARCHE ON IRANIAN UNDC VICE
CHAIRMANSHIP
REF: STATE 181093
Classified By: DCM Susan L. Ziadeh for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) Pol/Econ Chief November 1 delivered reftel demarche
concerning Iran's vice chairmanship of the UN Disarmament
Commission (UNDC) to MFA Assistant Under Secretary for
Coordination and Follow Up Shaikh Abdul Aziz bin Mubarak Al
Khalifa. Shaikh Abdul Aziz shook his head sadly upon
learning that Iran already holds the position of vice chair
of the UNDC and wants to do so again. He said he would
communicate with the Bahraini mission in New York to get a
better understanding of the "mechanics" of Asia Group
participation in the UNDC. He wondered whether there was
another Asian country that was active in the Commission that
could serve as a logical alternate candidate. If there was,
Bahrain could encourage that country to compete for the Asian
seat.
