(C) Pol/Econ Chief October 16 delivered reftel demarche
concerning UNSCR 1718 to MFA Director for International
Organization Affairs Ghassan Shaikho. Shaikho viewed the
resolution favorably, saying "we have nothing to do with
North Korea," no diplomatic, economic, or trade relations.
He said the MFA would distribute a letter to all concerned
Bahraini authorities about the resolution, pointing out the
restrictions and sanctions the resolution puts into place.
He said the only possible area of contact between Bahrain and
North Korea is in the banking sector. The letter would
specifically reference this area and notify those responsible
for monitoring and regulating the financial industry that all
aspects of the resolution must be applied and banks have an
obligation to notify the government of any information
related to the articles of the resolution.
