(C) Pol/Econ Chief September 3 delivered reftel demarche
concrning issues to be discussed at the September 11-1 NAM
Summit in Havana to MFA Assistant Under Secrtary for
Coordination and Follow Up Shaikh AbdulAziz bin Mubarak Al
Khalifa. Shaikh Abdul Aziz istened carefully and responded
only to the poins on the Middle East. (Note: He had
already adressed the UNSC election in responding to a
demarhe on the Cairo Arab League Ministerial, septel.) He
suggested that the U.S. would gain better tration on issues
related to Israel if it launched r supported a new
initiative for peace between Irael and its Arab neighbors.
Such an initiative wuld enable Arab governments that support
U.S. poicies to demonstrate clearly to their publics that
the U.S. is seriously concerned about the regionl issue of
greatest importance to Arabs. He conirmed that Foreign
Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmd Al Khalifa would represent
Bahrain at the meetng.
