1. (C) Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid Al-Khalifa, during a
June 13 conversation with the Ambassador, stated that the GCC
Foreign Minister meeting on Iran held in Riyadh on June 10
reached no specific conclusions. He said there was great
appreciation for the Secretary's May 31 announcement on Iran,
but disappointment that the GCC countries had not been
engaged on the details of the initiative. In that
connection, he hoped that the proposed Gulf Security Dialogue
could be launched soon. He said that the King was going away
on July 20, and he (Shaikh Khalid) would be leaving on
vacation towards the end of July, so he hoped that any
senior-level engagement in Bahrain as part of the dialogue
would take place before then.

2. (C) In terms of further GCC engagement with Iran, Shaikh
Khalid said that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud's trip to
Tehran after the June 10 meeting in Riyadh was a bilateral
visit and not related to the GCC meeting.
