(U) In fiscal years 2005 and 2006, USAID Nicaragua granted more than $800,000 to 14 programs that supported the objectives of the Secretary's Global Internet Freedom Task Force (GIFT). The following provides a brief description of the recipient, project, information technology (IT) component, and amount of funding received. --Recipient: Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) Project Description: Strengthening capacity to conduct free and fair elections. IT Component: Provision of computers, web-page design, and technical assistance to enable election officials to inform public of registration procedures, voting and polling information, and election results. FY 06 Funding: $50,000 --Recipient: Nicaraguan Youth for Democracy (JUDENIC) Project Description: Youth-targeted voter education and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) project. IT Component: Provision of computers, web-page design, and technical consulting. FY 06 Funding: $275,000 --Recipient: Office of the President/Communication's Unit (GON) Project Description: Support the implementation of the GON's Voluntary Access to Information Strategy (EVA) in eight key government entities. IT Component: Provision of technical assistance and training for web-page management and on integrated management systems. FY 06 Funding: $15,000 --Recipient: Fundacion Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Project Description: Improve the capacity of civil society to demand greater access to governmental information. IT Component: Program to train media how to understand and analyze data from government web-sites.
