(U) Luxembourg will soon send its eleventh small contingent of soldiers to Afghanistan in support of the NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF). The nine soldiers - all volunteers - will serve a four-month stint with the Belgian troops guarding the airport in Kabul. Their pending departure has garnered good coverage in the Luxembourg media. ¶2. (U) Comment: Luxembourgers remain proud of their membership in NATO and their troops serving in Afghanistan. Though the contingent from the Grand Duchy is only nine strong, it is not merely a symbolic contribution given that Luxembourg's armed forces number less than 1000 and soldiers must volunteer for overseas service.
