AMBASSADOR
1. Former Mozambican Prime Minister, Dr. Pascoal Manuel
Mocumbi, and the Mozambican Ambassador to Portugal, Miguel
Costa Mkaima, met with Ambassador Hoffman on October 4, to
solicit support for Dr. Mocumbi,s candidacy for Director
General of the World Health Organization (WHO). If selected,
Dr. Mocumbi says that he will advocate for primary health
care and universal coverage in the developing world and will
fund such initiatives through partnerships and donor programs.
2. Dr. Mocumbi, the only candidate from a developing country,
is currently a High Representative with the European and
Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) and
was previously Mozambique,s Minister of Health (1980-87),
Minister of Foreign Affairs (1987-94),and Prime Minister
(1994-2004).
3. Ambassador Hoffman accepted Dr. Mocumbi,s CV and wished
him the best of luck in his campaign.
