PARTICIPATION IN PORTUGUESE NAVY SUBMARINE PROGRAM

Embassy Officer met with Portuguese Navy officials to solicit
further information regarding Portugal's submarine program
per reftel request. Navy officers confirmed that
Howaldswerke Deutsche-Werfte AG (HDW) is building the
Portuguese type 209PN submarines. Furthermore, the
Portuguese submarine contract specifies that South
African-owned Saab Avitronics will manufacture the electronic
support measure suite to HDW.
