REF: A. SECSTATE 122357
B. SECSTATE 123328
Pol/Econ Officer notified MFA Security and Disarmament Deputy
Pedro Sousa Abreu of the U.S. Missile Technology Control
Regime proposals on August 7. Sousa Abreu replied that
Portugal will have no problem supporting the proposal to
remove CAS numbers from item 4.C.4.a.6 as proposed in ref A.
Sousa Abreu added that he believes Portugal will also be able
to support the U.S. proposal to modify UAV/Cruise missile
criteria in the October meeting (ref B) but he will have to
verify Portugal's approval with technical experts in
Portugal's Defense Ministry. Assuming there will be no
conflict between the U.S. proposals and Portugal's technical
specifications, Sousa Abreu confirmed that Portugal will back
both reftel modifications at the October meeting.
