1. On the last official day for condolences, foreign
dignitaries continued to arrive in Kuwait to pay their
respects to the family of the late Amir Shaykh Jaber Al-Ahmed
Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Heads of state and government waited
patiently with thousands of Kuwaitis for an opportunity to
express their regrets to members of the ruling family. At
both the men's and women's condolences sites, parking lots
were full and lines snaked outside the buildings. Inside,
both young and old members of the Al-Sabah family, obviously
fatigued from the thousands of mourners, expressed gratitude
to those who offered their sympathies. EmbOffs attended the
men's and women's condolence calls and were repeatedly
thanked for their presence and for the long history of U.S.
support for Kuwait. Kuwaiti TV continues to air live
coverage of the condolence calls and daily newspapers issued
January 17 special editions filled with tributes to and
remembrances of the late Amir (ref A).
2. Among the world leaders and notables who arrived in
Kuwait January 16 and 17 are:
-- Afghan Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah
-- Algerian Special Envoy of the President and Speaker of the
National Assembly Abdulqader Ben Saleh
