SUBJECT: GOJ REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR ELECTION TO THE PEACE
BUILDING COMMISSION
REF: BARBIAN-BENT 5/18 FAX
1. This is an action request. See paragraph 3.
2. On May 10, Embassy received via diplomatic note dated May
8, the following request to support the election of the
Government of Jamaica to the standing Organizational
Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission. Text of note
faxed to WHA/CAR (Ref).
Begin text:
Ref: 50/111/4
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade presents
its compliments to the Embassy of the United States of
America, and has the honour to inform that the Government of
Jamaica has decided to seek election to the standing
Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission
established pursuant to General Assembly Resolution
A/RES/60/180 in one of the seven vacancies allotted to the
General Assembly.
The Government of Jamaica has been a consistent advocate of
peace and global security and is fully cognisant of the
importance of support for national efforts for post-conflict
reconstruction and recovery. In this context, Jamaica has
participated in a number of post-conflict peacebuilding
activities through civilian police contributions.
The Government of Jamaica is confident that Jamaica can make
a valuable contribution to the work of the Peacebuilding
Commission. Bearing in mind the importance of having
representation from all regional groups in the overall
composition of the Committee, the Government of Jamaica
requests the support of the Government of the United States
for its candidature.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade avails
itself of this opportunity to renew to the Embassy of the
United States of America, the assurances of its highest
consideration.
End text.
3. Action request: Request Department guidance on how to
respond to the GOJ's diplomatic note.
