1. (C) On April 5, the Ambassador discussed with Foreign
Minister Ramesh Nath Pandey Nepal's ability to contribute
troops to a UN peacekeeping operation in Darfur (ref A). The
Ambassador noted that he had talked informally with Chief of
Army Staff General Pyar Jung Thapa, who had volunteered to
the Ambassador that the Burundi peacekeeping mission was
scheduled to close operations in December, so the RNA might
be able to send a battalion to Darfur, Sudan (ref B). FM
Pandey responded that he would raise this issue with the King
when they met on April 6.
Estimate of Potential Contribution From Nepal
--------------
2. (C) RNA Brigadier General Poudel, Director of Peacekeeping
Operations, told our Defense Attache that one battalion (850
troops) could be ready in November, when the Burundi mission
ended. He advised that the RNA would need to know by August,
which would provide three months advance notice, to train a
force for a possible Sudan mission.
Comment
--------------
3. (C) We believe Nepal would be very interested in being a
part of a UN Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur.
