TAGS: PGOV PTER NP
SUBJECT: PAKISTANIS ARRESTED IN KATHMANDU REPORTEDLY HAVE
NO CONNECTION TO MUMBAI BLASTS

REF: A. KATHMANDU 1867

B. MUMBAI 1293

Classified By: Charge d'Affaires Nick Dean. Reasons 1.4 (b/d).

(C) Nepal police told Emboff on July 17 that the two
Pakistani citizens arrested in Kathmandu on July 13 (ref A)
have no connection to the July 11 Mumbai train bombings (ref
B). The Nepal police continue to investigate the alleged
connections Gulam Hussain Sima and Atta Muhaddin Siddiqui
(phonetic) have to an explosives-possession case from 2001.
The police plan to request court permission on July 19 to
extend the initial five days they were allowed to keep the
suspects in custody. The court could grant police a maximum
of 25 days to detain the suspects.
