1. (C) On May 18, Emboff spoke with Safieh Anderson, United
Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) Deputy Representative in
Kathmandu, who confirmed Nepal-specific information in
reftel. Anderson explained that the ongoing political
instability led UNFPA Nepal to request an extension of their
current 35 million USD five year plan. She said that UNFPA
Nepal worked both independently and with the government to
increase access to health services. She was eager to get
additional assistance to treat women with prolapsed uteruses.
A recent UNFPA health camp in the far-west saw 3,700 women
and, of those, over 1,000 women, mostly dalits
(untouchables),had prolapsed uteruses. However, she
lamented that UNFPA had funds to treat only 170 of those
women.
