16 SITREP
Classified By: Consul General Jake Walles. Reasons: 1.4 (b) and (d).
1. (C) The majority of IDF activities appear oriented to the
Israel/Lebanon border area.
2. (SBU) In Gaza military developments, there was an IDF
strike near Beit Hanoun on July 16 ; apparently an Israeli
UAV opened fire on a group of Hamas gunmen firing at Israeli
tanks across the fence line. Reports are 3 gunmen killed, 7
wounded. There were also reports of brief IDF ground
incursions in northern Gaza. 4 Qassams were fired against
Sderot; there were some reported injuries, but no damage.
3. (SBU) In the West Bank, IDF arrest operations continue;
raids in Nablus and Jenin resulted in 7 arrests. The al-Aqsa
Martyrs, Brigades claimed to have fired across the West Bank
fence line north of Jenin and wounded an Israeli, but there
has been no confirmation.
4. (C) In political developments, President Mahmoud Abbas
(Abu Mazen) remains in Ramallah but is making plans to return
to Gaza - probably on July 17.
5. (SBU) The Karni crossing is reported closed as of 12:00 pm
local time; the Nahal Oz fuel transfer point is open. 8 of
10 electricity feeder lines are reported operational, but
Rafah is reported as not having electricity on July 16.
