(SBU) Drawing on reftel A, we urged on July 24 that ASEAN adopt a balanced approach to the current violence in Lebanon and Isreal. We conveyed talking points contained reftel to Aziz Nurwahyudi of the Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs' Subdirectorate for ASEAN Political and Security Affairs. Nurwahyudi said that Indonesia's delegation had already departed for the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, but undertook to coordinate the non-paper with them. ¶2. (C) We note that the talking points cover much the same substance as Department's guidance provided to the staff of President Yudhoyono on July 20 (Ref B). The President's office had requested background material in connection with a meeting that Yudhoyono held with Ambassadors from Middle Eastern countries and the designation of former Foreign Minister Alatas as Special Envoy for the Middle East. Judging by President Yudhoyono's statements to the press following that meeting, Department's guidance was taken on board. PASCOE
