SUBJECT: INDONESIAN RESPONSE TO MESSAGE ON MEETINGS WITH
HAMAS
REF: A. STATE 37552 (HAMAS MEETINGS)
B. JAKARTA 2483 (HAMAS MEETINGS)
Classified By: Political Officer John Rath. Reason: 1.4 (d).
(C) We conveyed and discussed ref A points March 10 with
Wahib, Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Deputy
Director for Middle Eastern Affairs, and emphasized our
request that the GOI not meet with Hamas representatives.
Wahib replied that the GOI had not sought direct contact with
Hamas, either from Jakarta or through Indonesian missions in
Amman or Tunis, nor had Hamas sought meetings in Jakarta even
though a Hamas delegation had visited nearby Malaysia last
month. While Wahib emphasized that the GOI had no current
plans to meet with Hamas, he said the GOI sees value in
international community interaction with Hamas in order to
convince Hamas of the need to moderate its stance. We
repeated the ref A point that Hamas had not moderated its
stance after such interaction, but rather had used such
interaction as a platform to spout a hard-line position.
