KOREA: INTERIM REPORT

1. (C) We delivered reftel demarche to MFA Deputy Director
for Northeast Asian Affairs Tumpal M.H. Hutagalung on
September 1. We stressed the importance of Indonesia's
active participation in implementing the resolution to ensure
effective controls on North Korea's nuclear program. We also
left a copy with the North AMERICA desk. We have requested a
meeting with the office of International Security and
Disarmament, which has the lead on this issue. We will
report that meeting septel once it occurs.
2. (C) Hutagalung said Indonesia's position was to promote
stability and security on the Korean Peninsula and the region
and to encourage the resumption of the Six-Party Talks.
Indonesia was opposed to North Korea's acquisition or
development of nuclear weapons and was cooperating with
international efforts to that end.
