The Ambassador met January 12 with Assistant Minister of
Foreign Affairs Nguyen Duc Hung, and delivered reftel
talking points. AFM Hung did not provide specific responses
to the Ambassador's points, but said he would ensure that
they are raised with Foreign Minister Nguyen Dzy Nien as
soon as possible. The Ambassador noted that Vietnam's
effort to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security
Council in 2008 makes the issue of UN reform very important
for Vietnam. If Vietnam anticipates exercising its
leadership as a UNSC member, it should also be ready to
support the reform of the organization.
