1. (C) At 0941 on June 20, a UN-chartered Airbus departed
Lungi International Airport in Freetown with former Liberian
President Charles Taylor onboard.
2. (C) Taylor departed the Special Court compound via
helicoptor at 0900 enroute to Lungi under heavy security.
Armored vehicles and UNMIL Irish troops were present in the
compound to ensure a smooth transfer.
3. (C) Taylor is scheduled to proceed directly to The Hague,
where the Special Court for Sierra Leone will establish an
alternate venue to try Taylor on 11 counts of war crimes.
Estimated time of arrival is 1715 Zulu, per the UN.
4. (C) Taylor's departure occurred before the local press,
public, or even Special Court staff had the chance to digest
the UK offer to accept Taylor if convicted or the June 16
UNSC resolution that made the transfer possible. High level
Court staff did not know about Taylor's transfer until after
it occurred.
