1. On May 31 emboff delivered reftel dipnote and talking
points to Department of Foreign Affairs Human Rights Section
Director Eamonn MacAodha. MacAodha confirmed Ireland's
participation at the September 7 New York meeting of the
States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights but said that while Professor Ruth Wedgwood
is a strong nominee for the UN Human Rights Committee it is
too early to promise Irish support for her candidacy.
2. On June 1, post received a diplomatic note confirming
Irish consideration of Professor Wedgwood's candidacy with
text as follows:

The Department of Foreign Affairs presents its compliments to
the Embassy of the United States of America and has the
honour to refer to the Embassy's Note 341 of 31 May
concerning the candidature of Professor Ruth Wedgwood for
reelection to a seat on the United Nations Human Rights
Committee.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has the honour to assure
the Embassy of the United States of America that this
candidature will receive careful consideration.
