(C) On May 24, emboff delivered reftel points to Department
of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Russia, Eastern Europe and Central
Asia Director Kathryn Coll. Coll said that the GOI supported
the USG's efforts on South Ossetia and hoped for a
breakthrough that would resolve the situation peacefully.
She noted that the GOI lacked a strong bilateral relationship
with Russia, but was attempting to monitor progress on
resolution efforts. Coll added that there were no imminent
plans for a major EU-wide discussion on the issue. She
mentioned, however, that EU Special Representative for the
South Caucasus, Peter Semneby, was scheduled to address the
May 30 meeting of the EU Political and Security Committee.
She also said that the DFA would pass reftel points to EU
counterparts in Brussels.
