1. (U) Consul General contacted Netherlands CG April 11 to seek
an update on the case involving the Estonian soldier serving
with NATO forces in Afghanistan, who was arrested at Sharjah
Airport on February 23 for drunkeness and molesting a female
police officer. Sharjah's Shari'a court originally sentenced him
to one month in jail and 80 lashes, but the prosecutor was
appealing the decision (reftel).
2. (SBU) The Dutch CG said that on April 10 he had paid bail for
the soldier, who was now out of jail pending his sentencing on
Saturday, April 15. (The appeal itself was heard Saturday, April
8.) The Dutch CG said he had taken the soldier for medical
checks, and that "everything had checked out fine."
