(C) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to Mawazo Paul Kaducha,
head of UN Systems at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs'
Multilateral Division, on February 27. In response to
violent reactions elsewhere to offensive cartoons, Kaducha
said the Government of Tanzania (GOT) does not condone
violence to solve even inflammatory problems. Kaducha said
that the GOT cherishes freedom of the press as well as
freedom of expression and lawful assembly. In Kaducha's
view, the people of Tanzania do not have extreme tendencies
and were not inclined to a violent reaction. He stated that
the GOT did not plan to make a statement regarding either the
cartoons or reactions to them elsewhere.
