1. (C) On August 2, Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs
Cheikh Tidiane Gadio told diplomats that President Abdoulaye
Wade will travel to Sudan, August 4-7. During his visit, he
will travel to Darfur to meet with Senegalese peacekeepers.
On August 6, he is scheduled to meet Sudanese President Umar
Al-Bashir in Khartoum and will press Al-Bashir to accept the
African Union Mission in Sudan,s (AMIS,s) conversion to a
UN peacekeeping force, telling him that he really has no
choice.
2. (C) COMMENT: Gadio did not indicate if Wade is going on
an AU mission or on his own initiative. However, Wade has
consistently supported rehatting AMIS since the UK first
proposed the idea. END COMMENT.
