1. (C) Charge' met with Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)
Additional Secretary Geetha de Silva on August 30 regarding
U.S. concern that Sri Lanka may be considering procuring
lethal military equipment (LME) from Iran. Charge' explained
that under the Iran-Syria Nonproliferation Act, procuring LME
from Iran could subject Sri Lanka to sanctions. De Silva
responded that she was unaware of plans to procure weapons
from Iran. Ambassador de Silva said she would convey our
concerns to the appropriate GSL authority and contact us
after the matter was reviewed. Charge' provided Ambassador
de Silva a copy of the demarche points as a non-paper.
